A Tiny Little World ...

It's the age old question of where to start - in this case - my new blog. It's the chicken and the egg. With no readers, why bother? By my own admission, I'm not really that interesting and - like buttholes - have opinions' it'd be best not to air ....

With the above in mind and write to "my public" whet I find interesting and, if nothing else, breaking up the monotony while taking notes (for my own future) reference.

- - -

Some number of years ago I purchased an inexpensive microscope after a tour of one of the local watewater treatment plants. I was teaching in a STEM program at the time, and the instruction offered at the South Treatment plant looked interesting and fulfilled the requisite PDH requires. It was a very interesting lecture-discussion and plant tour, and a section of the class delved into the microbiology of watewater treatment. We snagged grab samples from various points in the process to take back and - among other procedures - examine under a microscope. Watewater treatment plants host a lively community of bacteria and examining the species, numbers, and activities under a microscope was a into a tiny little world. Without it, the entire plant would serve no purpose.

It was interesting and I hadn't used a microscope much since high school. I looked around a bit for a used one at first, then eventually settled on the one used in class, an OMAX procured through Amazon. I went out and collected water samples from local sources and eventually began examining tissue sample and fish scales gathered from a local state salmon hatchery. The interest in water samples having waned a bit, the microscope sat seldom used, an artifact on a table in my office for some time ...
